What is that error message?

Is this a legit Windows CD/DVD?

At what point in the instillation does it fail?

Well it is more then likely hardware since Windows XP will install on any machine that meets the requirements. That might of kinda sounded weird but I basically mean is if their is a fault it is 99% of the time a hardware issue when installing.

Their are really two things I could think of that would cause a early problem during the install. It will either be the Ram or the Hard Drive. When windows installs it loads part of the install information into your ram and thats why you sometimes get memory errors. After formating and XP restarts the system then the install works on writing everything to your hard drive.

So depending on were it stops it can either be the ram or hard drive. That said it can be your motherboard, any PCI-E, AGP, PCI, ect piece of hardware causing the problem. But most of the time its either Ram or the hard drive,

Download some hard drive and ram testing software. For Ram I suggest download memtest 64 write it to a CD and boot from it. It will take about 3-4 hours to complete on the quick test and will let you know if their is issues with memory. For the hard drive try searching for a open source hard drive diagnostic tool. I haven't used one in awhile so I am unsure which ones are good out their but most due the job. You will want to be looking for bad sectors which can cause restarts. Try that and let me know if it works.

I had this problem with a dell, so if you are using any big company computer this might happen. If you put in new hardware such as a different hard drive then windows wont work. I have no idea why, i couldnt egt around it. When i put the old hard drive in, it worked fine. My guess is that once the windows from a restore disk is on the computer, it checks the specs. If the specs change, like something major, then it decides "this isnt my computer so i won't work". So if you changed something between installation of windows and running it, that might be your problem.
