Hey All,
I just picked up a Compaq Proliant 1500 Master Server from Freecycle. I was wondering if anyone had any idea on the OS that comes with it and what you would suggest. I think the specs are dual 133 mHz / 56 or 98 Ram/ with 5 4.3 GB Hard drives. I'm using this as a NAS (Network Attached Storage) strictly for my house hold. I was thinking of using Microsoft Windows or A Form Of Linux.

Thanks for everything

A dual 133mhz... I would stay clear of Microsoft. What is your experience with Linux?

If it were me, I'd put Free BSD on it. But that's just me.

Hey,
I found SOL (Server on Linux) I'll also download Free BSD and try both out. I'm trying to find all the cords and see if it works first of all. I also have no experiance with Linux but I'm willing to try. Thanks

If you want to uses it for a NAS their are two OS that are great for it.

First their is FreeNAS which is a built off FreeBSD OS. Free NAS is a great solution that I have used in the past but stopped because BSD dose not play nice with my particular dell power edge server power management system. It takes up under 40mb of space once installed so it has a very small footprint

Their is another NAS called NASLite which cost about $20. I currently am using this from my home NAS and have not had any problems with it. The can purchase a verison that you burn to a CD. It boots the CD which puts the OS into memory and saves configurations onto a floppy driver or usb drive. This allows the hard drives to contain no part of the OS and is all purse storage. http://www.serverelements.com/

Damn that is one hell of a power drain just for 4gb of NAS. Did it come with the smart start disks?

You could store a lot of seasons of The Office. And Peewee's Playhouse.
