Assuming that you are asking about Google Page Rank, it's all about how many sites link back to, & their rating.

yeah and they have been manipulating page rank left and right lately.

Basically best way to get good page rank is to post good content. If you buy links or trade them with others they will smack you with a 0 and no appeal process.

Page rank is pissing off a lot of people lately.

Actually, I just sold a few links (on eBay & other auction networks) to our PR3 site! I hope that I get overlooked.

I know that our Google placement has been up & down for Laptop Repair. We went from Page 6 to 3 & back to 5. Everyone throw your hands up cuz here comes the big hill! Be sure to get your photo at the end of the ride.

Last year I had a website for which i used these ways:
1) Use meta tags
2) Submit to search engines
3) Use lot of words in your website for which you want your website to be at top

Sometimes due to exact match your website can be the first result and that may go off once they update their database which is done regularly after some days.

Before I sold my Toledo Explorer website I had a PR5 - PR3, and various others on various pages. Then i stripped it of fuinctionality and it is dying off due to the new owners not touching it and basically leaving it a static page. However I also worked for an SEO company in 2000 - back when GO, and DMOZ were meaningful.

One thing I learned through many trials and tribulations are Meta Tags - are not as meaningful anymore. Alot of algorithms look at the <h1> tags in ascending order so if you put relevant content inside those tags it will also help boost PR. Link exchanges with relevant sites and sites with greater page rank build credibility as well. However google is so flawed, many SEO companies saturate the engines with domains like battery-wholesale-laptops.com etc... and it hurts the companies that can provide more relevant content.

Also stay away from those mass submission sites where they will send your link to every search engine and their mother. Those actually hurt you. The engines will pick up your site.

The best way to get a good pagerank is simply to make a good site, with plenty of good content.

If you're selling stuff, make sure you have well written content about each product. Make sure that all links within your site are HTML links (flash menus will not be followed by a robot).

The more useful content you have, the better of an opinion a robot will be able to attain about your site. Also, if you have content that is useful to others you will get linked.

Just to give you a trick, make others to point to your website like DIC gives DIC++ subscription if you point your blog/website to DIC. That's also a good marketing strategy.

Just like the phrase "Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer", find your competition & do what they do. If they are landing on page one of search engines, there is a reason for it. Do what they do, learn what they do, & you'll be able to beat time, in time.

one thing more: i have heard that using frames reduces the visibility to search engines. But don't know the validity of this. someone throw some light on it.

Search engines tend to ignore all contents that are inside of frames.

There are a few other things -

1). Content relevant to <title> and domain names are helpful (you don't want a site called batteries-wholesale-outlet-store.com when you are selling flashlights.)

2). You do want to optimize every page and not just the index page. If you don't want a page indexed you will want to require a noindex meta tag.

3). When I worked at an SEO comapany, and many of them do this - they create a bunch of static pages to compliment the main website. Hence the many www.farm-llamas-goats.com weird domain names. They usually end up being a static page to www.farmllamas.com. Search Engines tend to frown on this practice and can actaully ban your site from their directories.

4). Adwords and Adsense are googles promotional tools, and if used properly can be very beneficial to you.

For more information on SEO and SEM. There are many great books out there to help as well as newsgroups and blogs.
