According to this page at Microsoft's website, Visual Studio 2008 Standard has "simplified menus and defaults", when compared to Pro. Now before I buy my copy from NewEgg.com, I was wondering if anyone knew what these differences were? I've used Visual C++ EE 2008, not extensively, but enough to be familiar with it, so if EE is just stripped down Standard then I guess I'm fine.

(I wasn't really sure what forum to post this in, but I figured that this was about the closest I could get.)

I do know from my usage of VS that older code ie VS2003/2005 do are not always compatable with each other (it does TRY to convert code but doesn't always come out correctly). The UI (at least to me) has looked pretty much the same since VS 2003. The thing that changes from year to year and version to version is the functionality with the program. Standard->Pro->Team all have different functionality and depending on what you are wanting to do will fill your needs.

Suggestion: If you are not in college and/or you're school doesn't have an MSDNAA i'd make friends with someone in school (I believe HS works too) and get this from the academic superstore. It is only $99 for the pro version there.

Yeah, I could easily do that.. But, IIRC, I can't use the Academic license of Pro for commercial development, which is exactly the reason I'd be buying it. I was trying to find out what the "simplified menus and defaults" were..

This is no difference I can tell. I have used standard VS 08 and pro and really did not find anything different in the interface. I am currently using team suit threw my MSDN subscription and they all seem the same from the interface standpoint. They all have their difference on the back end and features but the interface seems pretty similar.
