does anyone know if it is possible and if so where i can go to learn about using public key private key authentication in a php environment or any web browser client environment for that matter. The goal is to use a private key on the client computer to authenticate the user with the web server instead of a user name and password system.

I know its a long shot but if anyone has anything i would appreciate it.

i dont know if this is what youre looking for but have you tried cookies or sessions? you can assign unique id to different users but if they decide they wana log in from a different computer theyll need to register again plus they wont be able to log out.

i thought about that but the goal is to have a web based profile authentication based off a thumb drive which will hold the users private key. That user will be able to use any computer and authenticate into the site using that thumb drive. im starting to think that its not possible being that goggle is blank on the topic and there hasn't been much response here.
