We haven't done this in a while, but I always enjoy the stories.
skyhawk133 is my old CB handle. The 133 is every other number on the serial number of my base station CB radio and I would use it when "talking skip" which is where you bounce your signal off the ionosphere and down to another state thousands of miles away.
The skyhawk part was given to me by a friend who knew my favorite bird is the hawk.
Its been a handle I have used since I been around computers. Started out for my love of the Yankees and Chiefs, nykc (usually pronounced nikes) is more like a milestone in life. Now You Know Computers.
Nayana is Sanskrit, and means "Eye". I was given this nickname when I worked at an Internet cafe + cornerstore, and spotted trouble before it happened. Whenever trouble occured I always knew who was behind it, so I got called "the Eye" and not long after that changed to "Nayana".
Even now I get dragged to business meetings, because I can almost always spot who is honest and who is not.
As a kid growing up my parents called my Jay, as a nickname. I tacked on "man" when the internet arrived back in the mid-90's, since then I have discovered that "jayman" is a pretty popular user name and can be quite difficult to get these days. As a result, I ultimately added 9 to the end to be able to continue using it. Now even that is getting very hard to get when I create new accounts.
My name is Markus, Mark for short sometimes. People call me Marko to be cute, and when I was like 13 I thought putting a DaGeek at the end was cool, like "The Geek".
Many years ago, I spent a couple of weeks living in a Mongolian yurt ( or ger ). Needing a nome-de-ger, but knowing nothing about cultural naming practices, I chose to go by the Mongolian word for bear, or baavgai.
Turns out, you don't see a lot of Mongolian used on the net. Also, the double "aa" isn't common in English. As I chose names for various sites, baavgai was inevitably available. So, for computer based endevours, it's an alias I often choose.
Mine spawned from the early days of chat rooms where I had been known as Martyrs_Cry. The name had been taken from my love of magic the gathering back in the day of the dark series. The card, Martyrs Cry which features a quote from Vervamon the Elder "It is only fitting that one such as I should die in pursuit of knowledge". The card features a holy man being burned at the stake by someone who appears to be part of a dark cult. Could they be newbies perhaps?
The name Martyrs_Cry became hard to get on many networks so I had tried shortening it to Martyr which again was taken so I put on 2 for uniqueness. Since that day of my Internet birth, I have been known as Martyr2.
I still chat on the same networks I did long ago... just not as much as I use to.
