Can anyone tell me what the large port number can possible be (i.e... 99999) on a server or is there no limit to ports. I am writing a software application that uses ports and multi cast ip's.

Thanks I found the answer:

The Well Known Ports are those from 0 through 1023.

The Registered Ports are those from 1024 through 49151

The Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those from 49152 through 65535

so 65535 is the largest possible port

The largest possible port is because 65535 because it is the highest number an unsigned 16 bit binary value can handle smile.gif .

so u are saying that ports are only in 16 bit binary and never in 32 or 64 bit binary

I'm saying ports can only be below 16 bits yes, more specifically < 65535. smile.gif

I think it depends upon the protocol you are using.

Thanks Roger and INHCNN, as my second post on here I explain that the highest port is 65535, I just was not thinking of in in bits. Great Link INHCNN. Protocol should always be TCP/IP IEEE standard bhandari.
