I searched for a thread already started on this issue and couldn't find any. As you may know I've been having some issues with Xbox Live and just my internet in general.

I got my xbox live to work(kinda), but now i have run into another issue. When i sign on to live and if someone gets on a computer and access the internet, it kicks us both off and the internet goes down.

I have manually entered all of my IP, DNS, and Gateway settings into my xbox and it was working great. Now like i said the internet goes down all the time now.

Ive called my ISP but they are a bunch of idiots, so i asked a buddie of mine to see what i can try. He said that I need to open some stuff on my router for the 360 and that should help out, because the xbox is bringing the internet down? I dunno, i've never messed with this before.

So he said to punch my ip address into an web browser and it should bring up my router information. Well i punched in my IP address and it just took me to an ASK JEEVES page.

So i'm turning to you guys for some help. How can I access my router to try and open these ports? Or for that matter just configure my router?

What brand/model of router and modem? And how have you got the current set up? Can you connect two computers to the Internet at the same time?

So if I understand your situation... You have every node on your network ignoring the dhcp server... but since you have not configured your router, it is still running as a dhcp server. This could cause some problems

& that address would be.............

Do you still have the documentation that came with your router?

I'll try and answer both of your questions.

I will have to get back to you with the make and model because i'm at work right now.

I will have to try and hunt down the documentation and unfortunately i did not set any of this up. I was away at school and my mom called and had the ISP come in and set everything up. So lord only knows that they did.

Many ppl have had this same problem with xbox and ps3's and there are 2 solutions. First, turn off the media center in the gaming system or if your sharing files on your LAN then you need to Forward the ports for the gaming systems from your router. You can check online for the specific ports that pertain to that gaming system and some detailed instructions on how to do it. But if your not sharing files on your network, then just turn off the media center in the xbox and that should solve the problem.

Ok, that's something i haven't herd of or tried. I will give that a shot.

I found on the web a site that tells you what ports to open and how to do it, but for some reason when i punch in my IP address in a browser window it takes me to an ask jeeves page with things about IP addresses and DNS server errors.

Because you're putting in *your* IP address. You need to put in your router's IP address. Typically, this is 10.10.10.1, 172.0.0.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1. It can, of course, be something different, but those are the more common ones.

wow i feel like an idiot.....

so ill add to this feeling.....if do a "ping/all" will that show the address for my router, or is there an other way to find it.

Open up a command prompt (Start --> Run --> cmd).

In the prompt, type ipconfig.



That "Default Gateway"? That's your router address.

If it's a linksys, it's probably 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.100.1
If it's a D-Link or Netgear, it's probably 192.168.0.1
If it's a Belkin, it's probably 192.168.2.0 or 192.168.2.1
If it's something else, refer to the documentation or check the manufacturers home page.

Actually, I usually see Linksys' as 192.168.1.1.
