Akay, so i recently was shownby a friend of mine how to create music (note by note) in java, but that got me to thinking, how would a visualization work, a simple one, like just bars. i know how the display would work, but how do you get different frequencies from a music file? would you have something listening while the music is playing, or prebuffereing it? anyway, how? im drawing blanks on most of the problem.
remember, im NOT asking for a program, but an algorithm or explanation of how to go about doing this, or at least what i will need for it.

When you talk about a simple bar graph it shows how present pitches are at any given moment. You must somehow determine the volume level of each pitch at any given time.
I wish I could help you with this, but I do not know the Java audio library nearly well enough.
