Unix is an Operating System, & Linux is a kernel. A Linux kernel can be used with any distribution of Linux. Distributions are also known as a software set.

For example :

Linux :
Red Hat, Fedora, Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, Ubuntu... all use the Linux Kernel, but can have custom package managers, XWindows managers (KDE, Gnome), file systems, ect ect.

Unix:
FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, SCO Unix, Solaris, HP-UX, these all use their own Kernel, none of them can use each others (to my knowledge) nor can they use the Linux kernel.
