I have a question about databases and Java. I am trying to make a log of sorts for work. We have to keep a running log of events that happen and the time and date of exactly when it happens. Currently we are just using a word document, but I would like it to be a bit more structured and have the ability to search by date and subject. What is the best way to go about this. I have read a little about MySQL and Java on the NetBeans tutorials, but does anyone have suggestions before I give this a go. The log would have four columns - time, initials, subject, and text.

Use a blog for that smile.gif
You can search by date and by subject (tags).

nyway, what kind of an application are you going to write? A web application, a Java GUI application, something else? Do you want to administrate users, or is it free for all?
If you just want this very simple thing you could create it in 5 minutes based on this tutorial. However that example might turn out to be quite difficult to modify.

I was planning on making it a Java GUI application. I was hoping to have it as a list that streamed down the page. Just one entry after another. The reason I want to use a Java GUI is because I intend on adding different sections later on within the same window. Most likely a few tabbed windows that the users can move back and forth. If I could figure out the database part, I was hoping to add a section that handled outages of equipment later on in the same setup as the log.

I guess I just wanted to make sure that I was going to set out on the right direction before I started reading up on MySQL. I don't want to start learning and find out later that there was a better way of doing it.

Thanks for the input.
