when no one is using internet in my house, I went to speedtest.net and test my internet speed. my download speed could clock up to 1100kb/s and upload speed of 400kb/s. now, when my friend open his torrent, (or any p2p download engine) the internet speed could drop to around 600kb/s and upload speed of 150kb/s.
my question is, why is p2p download takes so much resource?

My guess would be is because you have multiple TCP (non UDP) connections. Since most ISPs throttle down the upload speed so much, your internet traffic is constantly waiting for every multiple download source. Less connections would equal more available resources to your internet traffic.
Torrents can really drain your network connection. With torrents you are sharing and downloading different parts of a file. So you have multiple's connections for uploading and downloading which take up a lot of bandwidth.
Its one of the things that comes with download items.
To increase download speeds do as follows : 1)disable windows firewall (NOTE: Only do if you have a GOOD firewall with your virus scanner.) as windows firewall block connection TCP and UDP.
2) go into your router and change the "Application Sharing".. i am unsure if they are on all routers.
2.. you can get onto your router by getting your default gateway > right click wireless icon > Status... now type the default gateway number in a browser.. i fyou have never been in before Default username: Admin Default Password: Admin
Be sure to change this for extra security.
3) Also my router has a built in firewall too and your may have too you can change this however but you may be at a higher risk to hackers
4) Check again at http://www.speedtest.net/ check your speed i only like to use this as it has servers all over the world. Also you can see how you compare aginst your town, county ,country and continent..
Hope these help
Oh and as a last resort change ISP's as theta download speed is not great as mine is not a great upload speed though. but i download from p2p at 850 kb/s which i am very very happy with

Well Certain things download faster biggle depending on how many seeders you are connected to. Also, the default password may be a few things such as admin, password, and 1. there may be a few others, but those are just a few that come to mind.
My download speed sucks, but my upload was not too bad Should have been better though

Yeah those are all great tips. I would also give your ISP a call and ask if they can up the speed because its a little slow. they will run some tests and the tech sometimes will help you out if they can. I know they can uncap your modem which can give you pretty crazy speeds but you really have to be buddys with one of the techs.
Verizon will take you from 768K to 1.5mb if you give them a call and your close enough to your sites box. Besides that theirs no much you can do except upgrade to another provider or faster service ur current ISP offers.
1000kb/s dwld speed is the average in my country. even the fastest is just near the 2000 mark here. the best I ever get here is around 1300+, and that with my windows firewall disabled. never try disabling the router's firewall though.
[rant]isp in my country is monopolized by tmnet, largely due to the fact that almost all the last mile connections in the country are owned by the company. this, coupled with zero competition from other isp (there is no other isp in here) make changing or upgrading to other isp an impossible option[/rant]

That really stinks their is no other companies around you to choose from. Well best of luck with the connection speed. If you ever get Fiber Optic connections around you definitely get it.
That's fast, neotrumatrix. Where do you stay and how much do you pay per month?
Yeah, I'm still stuck with a 256Kbps connection. But it's better than what I had 6 months back...a 64Kbps connection and 56Kbps when I shifted my residence a few months before that.

Does anyone have lower speeds than I do?
Yep that's my ISP commercial speed.. well not actually.. they say it's up to 384Kbps.. but test speed says it's around 256++ or so.. lmao..
well if I convert it to dollars.. it's 22$ per month.. unlimited.. lmao.. that's all I can afford.. No wonder JAVA website take minutes to load..and sometimes mostly at night.. it doesn't load at all.. sucks to be poor..
