I've been really interested in wireless lately and decided to try some projects out. Infrared seems pretty simple but theres a few things i dont understand.

1) where can you get sensors & IR LED's from (radioshack?)
2) do you need some kind of microprocessor to determine when the right signal is given / will one sensor pick up two signals if I have them too close?
3) how this actually works (is it like a photo-cell?)

thanks in advance.

Garbage laptops, old/broken PDAs, & remote controls.

I think with Linux you can use the device like a com port. Just don't break the connection stream or the connection is lost. If I remember correctly, it doesn't work like a dropped packet, the connection is what gets lost & you'll have to re-establish the connection.

I've only looked into using them, & I have no actual experience, so sorry.

I think IF will only be available at the Smithsonian because its becomming obsolete very quickly. lol IF can be obstructed by anything in its path, thus rendering it almost useless in todays environments. Try some of the new bluetooth wireless items. I believe after several years that its now finally becomming the new wireless standard for the future by allowing virtually everything to communicate with everything.

If you go to RadioShack, they seem to have a great selection of bluetooth items and they're usually on sale or low cost. You can setup everything or experiment with these items for just about anything you want to do and not worry about obstructing the signal.

Just guessing that you have a DVD player, Television, or V.C.R., then you are currently using IF today. To my knowledge these technologies have not (nor will they) switch to bluetooth.

Nice, no2.
I have very little experience with this, but i am fairly certain that the sensors are nothing like photocells. Maybe.
