Hello all,

OK I have a 10 week project to do. I need to develop a package that will allow a lecturer to send a group of students a tutorial question via SMS. Students will respond via SMS and the lecturer can review on his laptop their answers. The lecturer will transmit his quesitons via a GSM modem.

I will use the AT command set within a set of programs to carry out the various tasks (send receive etc). Now initially I had planned to use C but now I'm not so sure. Having looked around a lot there seems more threads and examples in other languages. My project lecturer is happy for me to source some code from elsewhere and utilise it as long as I signify that I have. He doesn't expect me to "re-invent the wheel".

So what I'm asking is what language would people recomend? I am wavering between using C or HTML. These are the only two I have any "limited" experience in and I just need some advice on which would be easier and quicker. I'm open to any other suggestions but if you respond please say which of the two you think would be easiest.

I am using my Vista laptop but also have an XP machine at home. The GSM modem is connected via serial port or usb (but with a usb to serial convertor)

Thanks lots for your help!

Well if all you know is C and HTML then have but 1 choice since HTML cannot do programming at all, it is simply a web markup language (it's not even really a language)

EDIT: I take that back. You're going to have to learn a new language. As far as I know you cant do web programming with C, so you're going to have to learn ASP, ASP.Net, PHP, JSP, or some other server side language.

Hmm ok so maybe stick with C. I mean web isn't a requirement of the project and if HTML won't do what I need then your right C is my option. However I'm not unwilling to learn a new language as I go along, and as my project is planned in stages that build up the layers of functionality I think I could tie in learning a new language with the development of my project.

The question now would be what langauge would acheive my aim easiest but is also not too hard to get to grips with?

Thanks for the input PC.

In my opinion, since you already have a seemingly fine grasp of C, I would look at C#. C# has the syntax of C++ and Java, and can be used in web based projects as well.

OK will do. I've found a few websites whilst trawling the web and they do cover C# so I'm guessing it's just as wide spread. I'll head to the library first thing monday and see what I can find.

Advice much appreciated, thanks.

what? You can do web programming in C... WTF Psycho. Heck a great deal of CGI used to be done in C/C++.

Of course your advice is probably still pretty valid. I would look into either a .Net or Java rout myself.
