This is a question for both beginners and veterens a like. This is just a thread for people to post a self analysis to point out their weakness(es). Where do you feel you need to improve the most to become a better prorgrammer? If you can provide any tips, or good reading material for any weaknesses posted here, please post them!

I'll start:

I find my biggest weakness is lack of planning when I tackle a big project. I do plan, but not to the extend I should be. I find myself having to code in-efficently or sloppy due to the fact that I didn't plan enough to forsee any issues I would have to overcome after I start coding. I sometimes forget to plan for small details about project specs and it requires me to have to make database structure changes, or code structure changes to accomodate the changes which results in wasted time and frustration.

I suppose this is more of a rookie mistake (Im pretty new to the field);

But what problems do you guys find you encounter consistently?

I have a distinct intolerance for incompetence.

A hard trait to have in this field I would imagine. These jobs entail dealing with incompetence on such a regular basis. I can be tolerable of client/user incompetence when interacting with them; however, under the surface I eventually get to the point where I don't know if I can take it anymore. I can generally keep control of myself; but it isn't always easy. I know how you feel.

Incompetence isn't necessarily knowing how to code this way or how to do certain things. It is a lack of common sense that disturbs me the most.

Prioritizing and Organization tend to be my biggest downfall.

a lack of faith in my own abilities. i honestly think i'm too dumb to do most things that i probably could do.

that and a lack of ideas (this is actually related to the first issue) and motivation (again, related to the first issue).

I jump around too much...i'll start learning/doing one thing and then i will jump into something else. I need to stick with one thing until i finish it or know enough about it that i can move on to something else

I need motivation to pursue projects. Money has never been motivation for me, people can flash out as much green as they want to me and I really don't care. I did programming for the fun, not to be called slave boy and write code at command. smile.gif

Overcoming my own OCD issues to create the design the client wants - no matter how badly I think it sucks. Smile and nod.... smile and nod.....
