Just a quick question really,

I've a machine set up 110miles away, I've set up VNC, Opened required ports etc and it works. However (long story), Someone keeps turning the pc off, resulting in no remote access at all mad.gif

the Ip of the remote machine is Dynamic, So im using DynDNS (which i've had no problems with)

I was wondering if there was any way of recieving notification if the machine was turned on, automatically?

Its a Pain in the butt setting everything up, driving back home to discover the system has been switched off!

Any suggestions (other than hardwiring the system into the mains!!!!)?

thanks in advance

Are you looking to get like an email or something of the like? or just the ability to quickly tell if the system is on or off?

Nagios

Or, you could set up something simplilar, since an entire management system would be overkill for just one machine. Run a script or program that would send a ping to that ip every so often & have it alert you when it doesn't get a result.

You could also look into setting up wake-on-lan, so when it does get VPN traffic, it'll power on. This is of course, granted they are not shutting of the power supplied to the computer like through a power strip.

I only use the remote machine to download on, since i've had to fork out for another 12mnth contract for the broadband.

Im not sure if Vnc (remote desktop) is classed as VPN, so i can't really comment. Though the wake on lan sounds like a good idea. But would that work with DynDns?

As soon as packet requests are sent to that machine, it's turning on. Where they come from is irrelevant.
