So I've been looking into buying a laptop, I'm gonna go with a Lenovo Thinkpad T61, now it's down to customization. Any advice as to the trade-offs between performance and power consumption? I had originally looked at upgrading from the Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1GHz (stock for the comp) to the T9300 2.5GHz with twice the L2 cache, and a 7200rpm hard drive over a 5400rpm one. I'd like it to run as fast as I can get it without making major sacrifices as far as battery life goes. The stock battery is a 6-cell, though I'm sure you can buy them bigger. Being frugal isn't really an issue, though if I can save money by not making any detrimental or unadvised decisions, all the better, right? smile.gif Any personal experience slash advice?

The 7200 RPM drive will suck more power than the 5400 RPM drive, although the difference will be on the order of 1 watt, at the outside.

The processor... The T9300 is actually rated to draw less power than the T8100. So you get all the benefits... More speed, more cache, and less power.

Going to the T9300 will save you some power, going to the 7200 RPM drive will lose you some power. Considering how long the 6-cell battery lasts, you're looking at maybe 5 minutes total loss from your battery life.

I second that Morphius Faydal, he also can get a 9 cell battery if he really needs lots of battery life.

I read a review from Tom's Hardware that pretty much confirmed the overall the 7200's will perform better than the 5400's as far as large file transfers go, but general usage might not show much of an increase. I suppose it's down to whether or not I want to save $35 or deal with possible heat and noise issues, however small they may be. We'll see, but I'll probably just go with the 7200. P.S. You guys are awesome biggrin.gif
