I was just wondering if putting a link to my site in my signature on forums was a good idea for ranking, i.e. do the search engine bots see these links as just tonnes of crappy links linking to the site?

The one benefit of linking to the bottom of your signature would be a possible influx of traffic, as for helping out with PR; I wouldn't be expecting much from that.

Word of mouth advertising such as that can help it gain in popularity over the long term though.

I've got a few links in my signature - they don't seem to do anything for my search engine ranking, but they do tend to give me a trickle of traffic from users at this site that click them.

in fact the signature is very good when you are registered in a forum, it can link to a site!

Most forums provide links with a nofollow rule. This rule will keep the links from effecting your PR. Spammers always ruin everything legit!
