QUOTE

Software giant Microsoft has dropped its three-month-old bid to buy internet firm Yahoo because the two sides cannot agree on an acceptable sale price.

Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer formally withdrew the offer in a letter to Yahoo chief executive Jerry Yang.

Mr Ballmer said Microsoft had raised its original offer from $44.6bn to $47.5bn (£24.1bn) - $33 per share.

But he added that Yahoo had insisted on at least $53bn, or $37 a share - more than Microsoft was prepared to pay.

The software giant had wanted to do a deal to be able to compete with Google, which dominates the lucrative market for internet advertising. ...

I was hoping they'd merge (or get bought out rather). Oh well.

Yeah they needed the sort of drive Microsoft could provide for their company imo. I too was pretty saddened when I heard this. Yahoo is a pretty big contributor to the open-source community as well, I also wondered what was going to happen if Microsoft did happen to buy it out.

Oh wellz.

I wish Yahoo would just die already. The site pisses me off because everything is so slapped together and or ripped off from Google. Plus if you run across them at IT trade shows etc they always have these fancy booths and think they are all that.

I too was glad to see someone slip through M$'s iron fist.

M$ philosophy: If we can win, we'll buy your ass & tank your company. If that doesn't work, we'll file false lawsuits & waist your money in court. Either way, we win.

Even if Yahoo is crap, they shouldn't have to sell if they don't want to.

& as far as Yahoo being "open source", I'd like to see exactly what you mean by that. I know a while back Yahoo was hit pretty hard for filtering Linux replies out of their Yahoo Answers site. This was due to heavy funding by the previously mentioned.
