I am taking a high school programming class and for our final, we have to make a game. I chose a more futuristic version of defend your castle. I just started today and so far I have a little guy in a vehicle that can move up and down and shoot bullets. Pretty much you are on the right side of the screen and your enemies come from the left side. Your objective is to kill all the enemies and not let them reach your side of the screen. I plan on having basic upgrades for your weapon such as :
1) Faster Bullets
2) Faster Firing
3) Stronger bullets
4) More Weapons(If i have time)
5) Health upgrades/repairs
6)certain specails such as a bomb that can clear the screen when needed

I am just wondering, what other upgrades and improvements might you recommend to make the game better? I have about 20 more days to complete it, so I am not in a rush.

Well first I suggest you go with you have and get that all coded out before worrying about upgraded features. 20 days may sound like a lot until you hit a bug that eats up 3 days worth of time. Might be better if you just get the rough idea planned out, coded and if you still have a reasonable amount of time then you can put in the extra features. smile.gif

Auto Turrets are always nice.

But anyways, it's too early to seriously be looking into this. Get the base game play down.... program it in "passes" where you start with a skeleton; then come back and run through it all adding a bit more detail. And then again, and again.

And then, that way, if you run out of time you won't be in a situation where, say, the player's gun can have the snot upgraded out of it, but the castle won't actually fall.... or anything else catastrophic.

Thanks. It is playable as of now, but very basic. I have it designed and its turning out quite nicely. I allow you to shoot 2 bullets at a time right now, i am thinking about adding 3 more and then i need to give the enemies health. but right now it is playable and does get kind of hard.

First of all work on the design! Second work on the base of the game, features can be added later.

design as in graphics is not going to happen. It is for a class at school and it is not worth my time to find good sprites for it. As I posted previously, it is playable, there are multiple levels and enemies and a store already, so I could say im done now. I am just looking for features to add now because the only thing I dont have is an auto turret. Spearfish I really like your idea, thanks

I mean the internal design, on how you want the game to interact such as structures...You're making it for console right? ie DOS window.
