newbie to php so watch out

got me a script that calls for 10 database entries (news stories) and lists them in descending order...
when one of those 10's titles is selected the whole article will be brought up.

what i want is to make a blog work for me
how do i set it up so it works like every other blog
the most recent news updates are shown first
and the rest in descending order.

and also, say ive got different tables i want each of these articles in...
how do i split them up so theyre all displayed in different areas...
