I have seen people when showing off their websites have an ip instead of an url.

How (if possible) can i use my router to host my web files whilst i test, not to host anything on the web, just so i can veiw locally?

Most people dont actually store the web files on the router.. its actually local on your pc which has to be running IIS or apache or some other web server..The router just reroutes the outside traffic on port 80 to your local machine..so on the internet the address of the web site would be http://24.234.23.23/index.htm or whatever.

Keep in mind that your router would have to be set up for this.. Depending on the router it should have a feature called port forwarding which takes care of this.

Basically what the domain name does, is forwards your domain name (e.g. dreamincode.net) to the host's external IP (e.g. the DIC server's IP), this is just how you can run a site without purchasing & maintaining a Domain name.

But it isn't all that great of an idea to just use your IP for sites, then everyone that visits knows your IP! wink2.gif

The ip address is the external routable ip address. You can view the ip address of a URL with nslookup.

If you truly desire putting a website on your router, check the list of DD WRT & buy a 2nd router & try it out.

ya man most routers like linksys can easily show pages and files through out your house. with ip address. use
webactive
theres the link

to use it on the actual web u gotta go to its control pannel by going to run
typing cmd then in cmd click ipconfig enter the address that says default gateway in your web browser. if you didnt set a passsword on it you can faind the default pass word on google. should be like user then password. or something like that. then find were it says allow hosting. enable it.
i cant walk you throu the rest but you can ind out how to on some site or a tool on download .com
hope it helps

You can get yourself a free domain name from somewhere like http://www.no-ip.com that still works even if you don't have a static I.P.

ok if you have your router at home, not a school router or work router.
you should be able to find the defult user name and pass for it. to get to the login screen go to run type cmd then type ipconfig.
open your web browser type in the address next to dns defult gate way or just defult gate way depends.

finding the defult pass word if you have your manual for itit will be in there. if not get your model version and search for it on google.
it should be like user then pass or somthing like that thats what my was.

once you enter the user and password. it will show you a website thats built in to your router.
just enable hosting and theres a bunch of fany setting that you can do like dns and all that stuff.

hope it helped icon_up.gif icon_up.gif
