Hi

I was snooping around in my storage and found an old American Conquest disc (woot tongue.gif ) and decided to install...

Went onto Auto play where it showed :

Install
Direct X
blah~
blah~

and before i could click Install a popup came up "Setup.exe encountered and error and had to close " the usual windows error message.

Went to E drive right click, explore and clicked Setup.exe, same error...

any ideas?

It's trying to use an older version of DirectX that the game relies on and couldn't find it. You will need to install DirectX (version on CD) before continuing.

Do you have winzip installed? If not, do so.
If you have any anti-spam or anti-virus programs disable those also.
I'm checking for other possibilities.

Is the disc damaged? That could be a reason why the setup doesn't work.

That's highly unlikely. All DirectX versions are backward-compatible.
You can run DX 8.1 code on 9.0 as well.

That would be correct of games using DirectX 7 or higher, before that they were not so backward compatible as they are now. Case in point, MS Baseball 2000 used to use DirectX version 5 I think. I had 7 installed, wouldn't run setup until DirectX was installed.

Try running the setup command from the command prompt. This should give more details, sometimes it does, other times it doesn't. Just thinking of what has worked for me in the past.
