I know there are some people out there that love their Mac books and their iMacs and whatever else Apple has thrust upon the world, but there are also some people who think that Apples real shinning moment has been with the iPod, iTunes, and the iPhone...in your opinion should Apple have started researching and developing these technologies earlier, or has their influence in the computing industry (*gags a lil*) been more important than their influence into the phone and MP3 player/music service industry?
edit: there was supposed to be a poll at the top..but you can just answer:
Yes. No. Macs Suck!

agree with capty. apples would be gone right now had it not been for the ipods. people have the misconception that mac computers are better but in fact its still only an opinion. its all hype but people are dumb enough to buy into it and believe it. i personally dont care for apples products but i probably will buy an iphone cause they are a sweet product
Some people would agree with you and some would not. That's what i want to find out. How many people think that Apples success is based on the Mac and Mac OS versus how many people think that Apple is only successfull because of the ipod/iphone. Also how would it have affected phone technology today if Apple had began developing things like the iphone say 10 years earlier.
people have the misconception that mac computers are better but in fact its still only an opinion. its all hype but people are dumb enough to buy into it and believe it.
Who are you to tell that people have that misconception ? And who give you permission to insult all Apple customers and user. It was hype - you're funny guy.
Actually, I don't want to comment such a post at all.

I would appreciate it if you would comment because if you notice all comments so far have been from windows/linux. Since this thread is about Apple and their success, it would be helpful if you put in your opinion seeing as your OS icon is apple...rather than putting someone elses down.

Why do you think iPods are so popular ? Because of the hype or because they're elegant, the sound is great and the interface is easy and fun to use ? Maybe iPod family boost Apple success, but that doesn\t mean that Macs suck. I've been Microsoft user since 1998 and before 7 months switched to Apple laptop. Seven months I've been more productive than the last 3 years, 7 months happier than my last 10 years computer usage, 7 months using absolutely brilliant OS that has never crashed, not once. For me Mac OS got beautiful interface and the speed and stability of UNIX ( Mac OS is based on FreeBSD ).

I've never really used Macs for computing with any regularity, so I can't really comment on that.
I do own an Ipod, and the reason I do is marketing - I fell for it. It's a sleek little design that looks neat. I can tell you there is no sound difference between an Ipod and any other player out there, but I have one anyway - hell, I'll probably get another when this one dies.
I believe that Apple's computers are very overpriced, but DAMN they look good, and from what I've heard, they are very solidly built. @Marko- I own an iPod touch and I use it all of the time. I will probably never own an Apple because of the cost, and I will probably always be able to find a better computer for less.
I have never used OS X for more than a few seconds.
I have an old Mac running OS 8. It's pretty sweet, very advanced for it's time (and even relative to many computers today).
The main thing selling Apple products today is the image. I don't think anyone here can argue with that. I see Apple products used as electronic jewelry more often than I see them used for computing/listening/watching.
The fact that many people use the terms music player, MP3 player (even if it plays other codecs ), and iPod interchangeably does not help things.

About the supposed misconceptions, well, it's been my experience that most of the people buying computers from Apple DK/DC about the hardware specs. It's usually possible to pick out parts (or an OEM computer) with better specs for the same/less money.
I think the misconception that some people make when buying Apple products is that they're actually buying better hardware, and that's why it costs more.
I think the higher prices are more related with the whole image thing though, in order to keep Apple computers "for the elite" if you know what I mean.
"Better" is a pretty subjective term though, you shouldn't use it ambiguously.
And no, Mac OS X is not really based on FreeBSD. Parts of the kernel were "derived" from it. It was really based more upon Nextstep.
I have seen reports online that Mac computers are overwhelmingly preferred over pcs in colleges. And the main point that i dont think they mention is the fact that the majority of that "majority" are art and graphic design students. I know at my school a mac is required by the architecture/art/graphic design departments. On the flip side, the entire Engineering college requires and does not support anything other than PC, whether it be Windows or Linux/Unix. So in short, i think when they do these surveys they need to take into account the type of schools they are conducting these surveys and the types of students that are being surveyed. Because at my school it would seem the studies were wrong, PC is preferred over mac, but at an all art school it would appear that macs are preferred over PCs...
always remember..90% of statistics can be made to say anything...and 60% of statistics are made up by adjusting confidence intervals and allowing the sample averages to take on more meaning than population averages...theres a reason you're supposed to use the central limit theorm..

To be perfectly honest there's no reason they should support mac. All of the software that is provided to the engineers for circuit design and software design is specifically for PC. I know that the CS department is a member of the MSDNAA Academic Alliance so you can get Microsoft programs for free or very little charge (like vista business for free or for 24.99 for a DVD) There's no reason for any engineering major to have to use a mac.
what the effe are you talking about? os x is based on BSD, there is absolutely zero reason for any engineering department on the planet not to support it.
no one is saying that engineering major's should have to use a mac, just that it should be supported when they choose to do so, as many do.
