Hello all, I am just getting into database building and design, and would like to know or get advice on what type of program to use to create a GUI interface to enter data into a MySQL database. I created a small database that will allow me to keep track of all my books, but entering them using the command line is alot of work and would like to create a GUI Program where I can enter the information and save it to the database. Any advice will be helpful. smile.gif

I recommend VB.NET or C#.

There are numerous GUI front ends to MySQL, in addition to the official lot: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html

If you want a web app, PHP resources on the subject are extensive. For a client side app, choose a language first. If it's Windows, there's an ODBC connect for mysql, so pretty much any programming tool in the OS can use that.

Assuming you're using Windows, want to play with programming, and have no current preference... Get a copy of Visual C# Express and a MySQL OLE DB connector. Both free, have at.

Thanks for the reply. I should have been a little more specific. I am currenly running Linux Ubuntu 8.04. I'll check out the link you provided. I plan on using windows also. Can I create a program in Widows that will connect to the Linux MySQL server? Thanks for the advice.

MySQL connections don't care what OS you are running, or what OS the mysql server is running. phpMyAdmin is probably by far the most commonly used web based gui for mysql, so you could check that out. It can run either on the same server as mysql, or connect remotely from any other webserver.
