Well you ARE reading about cellular automata... Thats "the new kind of science".
Wolfram is of the opinion that cellular automata have more potential that initially thought. He believes that nature has an underlying cellular automata (or at least you will find that molecules and cells and other building blocks of nature tend to organize themselves according to cellular automata-esk rules).
Wolfram is obsessed with this idea. Its an underlying concept in the algorithms used inside Mathematica, its the subject of a HUGE book that he payed to have published and sold at a loss (though I think in the end he made money on the deal) since other publishers were unwilling to do it the way he wanted.
The book is really interesting and I love to thumb though it. But the truth is, the reference material in the back 2/3's of the book is actually more interesting than the first 1/3.
