IGN ReviewI love the Disgaea series because it's great for all players (meaning from the casual to the extreme hardcore). It's got silly stories, and the first game had a great story as well. But the third game really bothers me this time... Why the hell is a 2D/3D "tileoid" game on the PS3? Who would spend 500~600 dollars (or whatever outrageous price it is now) on a machine to have it play good old-fashioned sRPG sprite-based game graphics? To make it worse, these are the same graphics from the PS2 Disgaea 2 game!
I honestly think this game would have done *MUCH* better on the PC than anything, why? If it was on the PC it would easily be the anime-lovers / japanese-RPG fans' answer to Oblivion. The graphics make it scalable so it runs on any PC, the developers aren't using weird graphic effects, they just got a hell of a lot of hard drive space/RAM/what have you for a PC. You could cram so many features into a game of this design on the PC, have mod support, and online battles. Then you would have a truly endless-like game where there is actually lots of gameplay to be had, just like Oblivion.
Just look at the video, it looks sort of like what my game will look like! It might have been much less taxing on their budget to write a game for the PC since you're not bogged down by all the proprietary licensing and could even sell/distro the game yourselves given enough server power. I say if you're going to write a game for a console, you should spend the time and effort into really making the game live up to the console (ex: add many more frames of animation to all the sprites and in higher resolution so people who bought HD TVs won't want to hound you down).
There's a remake for the DS coming out of the first game, it's more worth it than that thing, because you actually do have multiplayer battles in it. I don't think Disgaea 3 even has multiplayer, isn't that alone worth getting the DS port of the first one instead of that thing?
What do you think? Do you agree this is a waste of a console, or do you think this game on the PC would be terrible too? Or perhaps you think it should have been another PS2 title?
