ok I really don't know much about dual monitors, and I'm not even running them but I would like to know for example, if you can run one monitor in 1280x1024 and the other in 1024x768. Basically the question is if the two monitors can be in different resolutions?

Thanks for any replies.

As long as you have the slots and video cards you can run as many monitors as you want. I personally am working setting up a 4 monitor workstation in which I will look totally awesome and be a tool all at the same time. wink2.gif

Dang 4 is a lot! I wouldn't mind it though. I just want a nice little setup for now though, until I have the money to spend on a super sweet one.

I have a 2 monitor setup at work. My problem is my home computer is a Laptop - I use my desktop as a beater for the wife and kids.

One good use for 4 monitors is:
1 - IDE
2 - Preview | Web Browser
3 - Graphics Program
4 - DIC

Ya that is generally what I want to set it up for on mine. Notepad on one side and browser view on the other. Then I could edit code and view it in a lower screen res without having to go through all the trouble of right clicking the desktop etc..

Plug it in, go to the Windows Display Properties, in the Settings tab, click the second monitor and set the option for "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor". Then you can set the resolution.

I used to run a 17" at 1280x1024 and a 15" at 1024x768, both in Windows and in Linux.

I got a converter to plug in my second monitor, now its not working how I want it to. I want it to be like a big desktop where you can drag windows between screens and everything. But my second monitor is like a clone of the first, it does everything that I'm doing on my default monitor...

Help would be appreciated, thanks!

Here's what you want to do:
  • Right click on your primary monitor and select Properties from the menu
  • In the Display Properties dialog click the Settings tab
  • Click on your second monitor in the diagram then check the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor
  • Click OK

Once you do that then both monitors will be independent of one another. Here is a screen shot of the Display Properties dialog and what you need to do. Remember, click on the monitor with the 2 on it before checking the CheckBox.

Hope this helps smile.gif

Ok I just tried that and nothing changed...

TO note however, I clicked on the "Identify" button and it pops up a big "1" on both of my screens...

It was ridiculously easy for me to add another monitor - had never really thought about it, found out my vid card had 3 outputs, so got an s-video for the telly and another monitor (same as my old one) and bingo, dual monitors plus tv-out for like £80!
