How hard do you think it would be to make a VERY simple tetris game clone in Java? Where would you start? I'm a new programmer looking for projects to learn and also showcase skills.

If the tetris idea is waaaaaaay past what a new coder should try what would u suggest for a cute/fun/non-lame game attempt?

Thank yoU! ph34r.gif

Well it's tricky for sure. Define new coder? Have you even worked with java? If you haven't then I would avoid working on a game first and get the basics down. If you have.. well that depends on your skills.

pong is very simple for a first game, all you need is three boxes on screen(left and right paddle plus 1 for the "ball")

just like tetris its realtime but alot easyer to program, Main thing to know is: How yo draw to the screen, and you have access to some sort of Timer/Clock.

But an even easyer game that doesnt require a timer is Tic-Tac-Toe/naughts and crosses.

This can even be made in console, so if you are a beginner and havnt done any GUI programing before I recommend starting there.

when i learned basic, the first program i made was rock, paper, scissors. actually, every new language i learned i made that game first. i also made pong, very simple, and a space shooter. just a simple asteroids game should be simple. once youre comfortable with the collision detecting and visual elements, you could start tetris. i havent tried, but now that you mention it....

Thank you guys! Yeah I haven't done any applications in Java yet so I think tic tac toe is the way to go.

Course I am bombing out of my Java class so I'm just working on C++ right now and we don't have a major project requirement sooo... sad.gif

It's too bad too since it is inherently so much easier to toss up some gui in Java!

Let me know if you try a tetris game NeoTifa, I want to see it!
