Of those three? I'd probably go with McAfee. Although to be quite honest, I hate all three of those packages. They are bloated and sluggish, although nowhere near as bad as Norton.

If you want my recommendation (although you said don't include other software)...
If you don't really want to pay money: AVG Free Edition.
If you're willing to pay money: TrendMicro PC-Cillin Internet Security.

They're both (in my opinion) excellent packages.

I've been a fan of avast for a while now. It works nearly as well as Norton (that's what I used to have) and uses almost zero processing power when running in the background. I don't know what your talking about bloated MF, perhaps in earlier editions, but the last 4 or 5 releases have been flawless for me and it is no where near sluggish.

I have to agree with William_Wilson that avast is pretty good, I haven't ever found a better free one

PC-Cillin? Only if you have at least 2 GB of RAM and don't mind having a lot wasted. I find that it is horribly slow.

Kaspersky is the best around and it's fantastic for the selling price.

I'm trying to figure out why MF says Avast is bloated. That's the anti-virus I use and it uses next to zero resources (must less than when I used to use AVG). I would go with Avast, and Kapersky is pretty good as well

I swear, I'm the only person on this forum that has had problems with AVG. Again, just about every computer that comes into my shop has AVG installed & updated. & everytime it's completely useless & didn't detect squat. I also will argue that Avast is not bloated. Plus it does a pre-os scan on demand. You can't get much better than that.

As of lately I have been losing a lot of respect for AVG. It has been having serious issues updating anymore.

On a positive note, it is a nice lightweight solution for PC protection at work - especially when everyone else there is using Bit Defender.

Because the last computer I used that had Avast on it, was slow as heck (the computer itself was slow, but avast just crawled along)

And whenever I've used it, PC-Cillin is, while not blinding fast, at least quick enough that I don't want to kill myself. And this is on a 512mb laptop.

the only reason why i ask is because i have used them
the only problem iam on is that i can't decide which is better
true that avast maybe a good one for detecting a virus but as i experience it dose not do anything with it....
And for MF it dose not detect some virus that Avast Had detected. and it has some re-install issue i cant upgrade the software with out using the removal tool...
the only problem i have in kaspersky is the update!!!! blink.gif

Do as I want, not as as I say. Means the computer isn't psychic. A program will perform as it is configured to do so.

How do you have Avast configured to handle viruses? You say it doesn't do anything with them, how do you have it configured to handle them?

Our network here became infected with a Spam bot of some sort causing our exchange server to have our addresses become blacklisted. After running Bit Defender, Ad Aware, Malwarebytes, everything we could think of to locate the source. I installed Avast and it caught and eliminated the problem.

It outperformed Bit Defender hands down.

Now Avast is the defacto AV for 50% of our machines. I can't convince the other techs to completely switch over from Bit Defender yet.

I have Avast currently on my machine, and thanks to NyKc, I think I will keep it. I have liked that it is not a resource hog too. Of course with 4gb RAM on a laptop that you really aren't running anything on, you barely notice when Avast is actively running.

Yeah if I needed AV on my Laptop I would go Avast. However my Desktop at home also Has Avast on it. It runs smoothly in the background but occasionally scares the shit out of you when it updates the Virus Database and you forget to turn off your speakers lol.

I actually had one customer complain about this. Ever since I turn off the sounds. She thought someone had broken into her house, since it was a mans voice.
