I am not sure what you mean by "startup project" but it is certainly nice to use for a project where you are a beginner. I personally wouldn't put it on the same level as PHP and ASP.NET but it certainly has its charms and can be a bit more "expressive" than both PHP and ASP. It depends on what you need the project to do and how. If you want to learn a language quickly and have a lot of choices and flexibility, Ruby can be a great choice.

Play around with it a little and see if you like it. In the end that is going to make the difference. If you don't like Ruby then why bother trying to do a project in it?

Rails fits for all puproses, from starup apps to big high-traffic sites.
It will be good for your start-up because you get full stack web framework with easy configuration and fast development cycle.

RoR Features:
MVC architecture: Ruby on Rails is based on the Model, View, Controller architecture that enables the data to be separated from presentation.
Database Access Library: Ruby on Rails includes a database access library - Active Record - that simplifies data handling in databases. Active Record automatically maps tables to classes and rows to objects.
Customized URL: Custom or Search Engine Friendly URLs can be developed using the Ruby on Rails framework.
Debugging: Detailed error logs are provided, making it easier to debug applications.

If you want to develop your own site by using RoR is very easy. Rails framework is very easy to use.
I visited the site developed in RoR, inkakinada.com, it's really nice. It has developed with good functionalities and I want to develop a classfied portal site like inkakinada.com for my home town.

I have been developing in Cold Fusion for several years and have not been sold on PHP mostly because of the amount of code and lack of error help when coding in PHP vs Cold Fusion -

I would like to build a construction estimating program and have been looking at Ruby / Rails and can't seem to find any commercial applications / or examples for that matter. Could someone help me with what you can do with Ruby From what I've seen the language is simpler and easier to master.

Many thanks for your kind replies.
