So I was trying to download win 7 when everything just stopped working. So I restarted... did this three times before I caught on that something was rotten in the state of... well PA.

Symptoms as I see them:

Browser traffic is blocked. Other ports (ping/telnet/email) work just fine. I CAN browse to the router's config page. In fact I can browse web pages hosted in the local network.

This is the only computer affected on the network (it is also the only computer that is not wireless -- it connects directly to the router).

Resetting the computer seemed to work the first time. But not the second time. Ditto with resetting the router. Now it seems that everything is just locked down. -- at least from browsing the internet (or downloading Win 7).

I am at a loss... My best theory was that the akamai downloader had used up all of the ports available to the browsers... but since it persists after a reset that can't be it. Now before you say "well that was a dumb guess" I should say that netstat showed that just about every port in the 1000's was in use (ESTABLISHED) by the downloader... so it was a guess.

My new best guess is that the router is going bad... but somehow that just does not seem right since ping/telnet/email would work if that was the case.

Could be the net card...

So some info that may help:

Windows XP 64
I am using a static IP. I have since disabled the firewall. I do have a virus scanner that can block ports but it is only reporting IRC block. All 5 browsers (Firefox/IE/IE64/Safari/Chrome) suffer the same fate.

It is not a consistent issue (my girlfriend now claims she fixed it... which is 1000 times more irritating than just being broken).

guess this should be in networking... if a mod would be good enough to move I would appreciate it.

** Moved as suggested **

Nslookup returns correct results? What happens if you try to browse to an ip rather than the domain name?

yea I checked the DNS... ping google.com resolves correctly. and putting an IP into the browser is just as broken.

Is is just the Windows 7 stuff, or *all* webpages?

And who's your ISP?

What brand/model of router?

because my girlfriend got it to work again I am thinking again that it has to have something to do with the win 7 download........

When it is blocked it is everything except the local network.

Comcast is the ISP.

Linksys WRT54G 2.04.4 (out of date I know but it works and was free).

Modem... I don't know Motorola something or another.

Modem comes up with ARRIS when I go to the status page.
ARRIS MODEL: TM402P

Well It HAS to be the win 7 download.
I can't seem to get it. I tried FF (java based downloader) and it locked up my internet *somehow* -- I have tried IE (activeX downloader) and it just plane fails. Chrome does not even bring up a downloader.

I have collected 5 keys in my attempts... that 5 out of the 2.5 million available that will never get used.

Actually, there are only about 10-20 keys that keep repeating lol.

Microsoft took the 2,500,000 key limit off. But I still doubt that there's only a few keys that just repeat.

Try one of the direct download links scattered around the Internet, rather than going through Microsoft's page. The direct download still d/ls from Microsoft, but you don't have to rely on the crappy script they've got running the downloads.

EDIT: I managed to download the 32 and 64 bit versions using the direct download links. On the first day, when their servers will still overloaded. So they *do* work.

Well it does seem that it was the download that caused the issue. I managed to download the 64bit Windows 7 using Safari of all the strange and frankly embarrassing things.

Safari did not attempt to use the download manager and just went directly to the ISO.

-- Yea I would have figured that out after a little while.

All in all I have to say that I like what I see in Windows 7. I am running it on VMWare so I don't get as much eye-candy but its many of the features that seem pretty interesting.

Problem is -- I don't have Vista so I can't tell what is new vs what is just vista re-packaged. If this whole "windows 7" thing turns out the be another "mojava experiment" I will be MOST annoyed!
