Lucky for you there is only one solid Ruby book out there and is pretty much the definitive guide on everything Ruby.

The Pragmatic Programmers Guide to Programming Ruby

Aka the Pick Axe Book because of the pick axe tool on the front.

Enjoy! smile.gif

I would say that are plenty good books, not only the Pick Axe book, which is classic.
Ruby Programming Language ( co-author - Matz - the creator of Ruby )

The Ruby Way ( stunning book )

Design Patterns in Ruby

Free stuff :

http://www.rubycentral.com/book/ ( the Pick Axe Book - first edition maybe )

http://www.tutorialspoint.com/ruby/index.htm

You could try ruby on http://tryruby.hobix.com/ and read the hilarious online book written by why the lucky stiff. Those where helpful to me, besides those mentioned before in previous replies.

Have fun!

A very good book to start with is "beginning ruby: from novice to professional" - though there are some parts in there which are very confusing, and you have to really use google to search for the meaning of the syntax of things.

You will need a text editor - like "textmate" and learning how to use your terminal to run your programs is also a good thing.

That would be a good starting point.

rubylearning.org

This guy teaches ruby online and for free. I found this through googling a while back and bookmarked it. I did a quick skim through it before posting and it seems that over 7000 people has been through his classes. Its worth a look, I think.

Hi,

I am also beginner for Ruby. The above mentioned books are great helpful to me.Once I start the ruby application, I got many doubts regarding the rails application development, I found a site for this, www.rorexperts.com. It is very helpful to me.

Thank You.

Hiya Pezz,

A great beginners' guide to Ruby is Chris Pine's free online book "Learn To Program". It is especially helpful if you are new to programming in general, but it is also a very good beginners' guide to the Ruby language.

I must also stress Realedazed's suggestion of the free core Ruby course at RubyLearning.org where I help out as a mentor. The course runs for 8 weeks and will give you a solid foundation in core Ruby. There are also several other courses available at the site, so be sure to check them out as well.

I hope to see you around! biggrin.gif

For a solid FREE text editor, I use SciTE.

http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html

It actually comes installed with the Ruby on Rails installer. Be careful about which books you read though...some books I've been through are outdated with the syntax. I kept getting errors running through certain tutorials until I googled the problem and found the error. The more recent the better.

It will be funny to write which books are "outdated". Because the post is for Ruby, not Rails

Two books I've used are "Beginning Ruby: From Novice to Professional" which zeros_and_ones mentioned and also Chris Pines Learn to Program, mentioned by qbass.

Both were/are great!
