Hi guys

Basically, I am having this problem.
I installed Windows XP with SP1a, but I am unable to connect to the internet.

What I believe I am doing is missing the ethernet adapater/driver thing. The ethernet card is 'plugged in' to my PC, and I ran some my ISP disk, and it says that I have not got an ethernet card; although I do have.

I believe my ethernet card VIA Rhine II... something or other. I have tried to download the drivers, and install them, but I have no real idea.
Can anyone help?

Many Thanks

you need to find out what type of computer you have, ie i have a dv6000t CTO laptop. Then once you have that, go to the manufacturers website and look for the support section. Once you are in the support section you should be able to find your computer via a search or something along those lines. Then you need to find the ethernet driver they have there and download it. Once its downloaded you need to install it to your computer. I assume you have a way of getting internet access since you are posting here. Your means of transport to your nonworking computer could be CD, floppy, usb drive, etc.

If you find this post helpful please thank me!

My PC is a custom-built PC, although not done so by me.
All I really need to know is how one installs the ethernet driver, as I will have to download it. I'm probably going to download the whole lot of ethernet adapters as I cannot be bothered to open up my PC for a look smile.gif

The Rhine II is the chipset. Do you know the manufacturer and model of the card? If you don't, it should be printed on the card itself. Just go to the manufacturer's website, and it should let you download drivers.

Like I said the post before... I have no idea, unless I open it up.
Many thanks though.

I have opened her up... she is ery dusty, more than last time.
The only problem is that I do not know what I am looking for. I found all the VIA hardware (I looked for the logo) and I managed to get VT8237, I think... there were 3 in total that I found.

Anyway, I've got the driver files on a DVD, but it has no installer... when checking my devices, it says that several VIA Rhine II and III drivers are installed but not working correctly.

So, what do I do?
Do I take the DVD files and put them 'WHERE' on my PC?
Do I plug into my PC the ethernet cable and hope it starts working? (I'll try this, but is far too much hassle) This doesn't work... sad.gif
Do I try and find some other drivers to install?

EDIT: Right, I am very sure that the driver I am looking for is the VT6103... however, it seems that I cannot find a version for it for Windows XP Pro (the original installation, SP3 just makes it WinXP).
Any ideas?

EDIT2: Okay, so I did some more opening up, and researched my motherboard. So I put in the serial/code to ID my motherboard (N1996) and it came up with my motherboard. It says that the ethernet 10/100 thing is Realtek SP27426 or something, so I went and downloaded/installed that driver.
Still no luck.
I am now trying some auto install thing I found.

With the device being onboard, does it at least show up in Windows Device manager? If not, I would suggest checking your system Bios & seeing if it's enabled.

It does not show up.
It does not even recognise my USB mouse, so I'm doing all the navigating with the keyboard; shortcuts rule!

How do I check my BIOS then? Is it from the BOOT menu thing before the OS is booted?

EDIT: FOund something. Intergrated Periphs... VIA OnChip's... the LAN is disabled smile.gif Trying it now...
Also the USB Controller were all disabled.

EDIT2: It works... well, I say that. I enabled all the LAN/USB things, and I got my little network icon in the bottom left! The USB so I can use my mouse.

So simple!!!

Awesome, great news. biggrin.gif icon_up.gif

Sorry that I didn't suggest it earlier, because it's rarely the case. However you had pretty much covered every other angle.
