What's the best program to use to compress large .mpg files into smaller .avi files?

Take a look at Sorenson video compression and conversion programs smile.gif

Just do a search in google. Its what I use, and I've never had a problem.

I have Virtualdub, but am unsure of how to use it to compress .mpg's. Do I just open the file and 'save as AVI'?

Roughly, how long should it take to convert an .avi to .mpg (for DVD Player viewing)? I am using Aare's AVI to MPEG converter.

QUOTE

FFmpeg is a very fast video and audio converter. It can also grab from a live audio/video source.  The command line interface is designed to be intuitive, in the sense that ffmpeg tries to figure out all the parameters, when possible. You have usually to give only the target bitrate you want.

FFmpeg can also convert from any sample rate to any other, and resize video on the fly with a high quality polyphase filter.

Sounds real good, but I don't know how to work in Linux apps because I'm running on Windows.
Could you please help me set it up?
