hi

i'm interested in becoming a professional programmer (i.e. get paid for it) and am wondering with the raft of qualifications out there; what is the best option for today's industry. I'm thinking learn either Java or C++, and i have a little experience of the latter. Finance is of course an issue; is there any funding for courses in the UK?? If someone could give some ideas, that would be great!

help please

The qualifications will differ between employers & positions.

There truly is no general list of qualifications.

Visual Basic would do little for a Linux related job coding in C, & vise versa.

Yeah it really depends on employer and position. Some need several years of knowledge of the language and some does not need much at all.

About funding in UK for courses i don't know, but i'll ask from a friend later who is from there and post in here if no-one else has done it before.

If programming is a career you are thinking of following then seriously consider getting yourself a degree in computer science ( usually referred to as as "CS" or "CompSci" ).

The general training and insights that a CompSci degree will provide you with will give you a breadth of knowledge that no certificate course can ever provide.

I'm not suggesting a CompSci degree is a panacea but having one will open doors that would otherwise be kept closed.

And, as I understand it, student loans are available for degree courses in the UK.
