My title has been IT Director for 2 years, yet I just passed the A+ Essentials....kinda funny. I'm not going to take the second half to actually get the certificate, kind of a waste of $125 imo. I'm working on a Microsoft Application Developer cert. at a community college & I want to go get SQL Server 2008 certified. Which reminds me I should get off of the computer & go read...

None. However, I do have enough training certificates to wall paper my cube and probably someone else's. Well, if I could find them. I recently left one in a classroom; they overnighted it too me! I guess at $3k a class, they can afford such frivolity.

I want to say Certs are worthless, but that's not entirely true. If you are an independent contractor, there's a chance it might impress a client. Then again, it might also make them think twice. I'm dealt with some many hopeless consultants with excellent cert lists over the years, it almost has the opposite effect.

If you really want a certification; don't pay for it yourself! Get an employer to pay, that's what the pricing scheme is aimed at.

While certs surely help you get an advantage over the guy whom doesn't have one, they are not to be confused with an ace in the hole! They alone will not land you any job.

Sorry, I was a little short with what I meant.

If two employee candidates that are in competition for the same position, & there is only one opening, if their previous experience & skill sets match or are very much the same & no determining factors show one better than the other, a certification will give an advantage over the fella (or lady) whom that does not have the certification.

I got an A+ certification back in high school, but I never tried to get it renewed, and then they changed it a whole bunch. I definitely wouldn't spend that much time or money on just getting certified now though.

I started doing domain-admin level IT support for a college near my town shortly after graduating high school, and have been programming for my university since leaving that position to attend school elsewhere.

Honestly I don't feel certifications are worth your time if you plan to pursue a 4 year degree. Most [decent] college departments should pick up someone willing to learn programming, and teach them what they need them to know. The same goes for entry-level IT jobs. If you can diagnose a problem pretty easily, you can land most of them, and just start climbing the ladder.
