Suggestions for WarGames-type messaging client

Posted 19 April 2009 - 08:52 PM

Hey guys,

I'm trying to develop a lightweight chat/email-client between two Linux machines. The point is to make it as barebones-looking as possible, with a 1980s retro aesthetic. Think the green IBM text of the Matrix, or better yet, the game Defcon (especially the intro screen). Or, of course, the film WarGames. So I'm wondering, does anyone have any suggestions on how to do that? I was thinking of modifying a Python chat client a friend painstakingly wrote in Python that used curses, but I think to be honest I can just write a shell script that allows messages between the two machines, and outputs random flavor text (troop movement stats, ascii images, meaningful-looking code!) between transmissions. What commands would I need for that?

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advice.

Well what you are looking to do is pretty much a classic monochrome screen text based program. You can write it virtually in any language as long as you stylize it correctly. I mean you could write a windows application, set its background to black, remove its border, expand it to the full size of the screen and then write thick monochrome green teletype style text right onto the screen.

Make a textbox, stylize its border and make its background black as well to match the form and you are well on your way to making something that looks like a client straight out of the 80s.

:)

Thanks for the encouragement, my question is that what UNIX commands should I use if I opt to do the shell script approach?

I can just skin the terminals, but I'm not sure how to communicate between two Linux machines on the same network.
