iPhone app Dev help

Post icon  Posted 25 April 2009 - 02:08 PM

Ok, so here's what I'm trying to do. I noticed in the past few weeks as finals have come and gone that all of the GPA calculators on the app store are priced anywhere from .99 to $4.99. Not so intriguing to a college iPhone and iTouch user. Here's where my idea lies, how about a free GPA calculator for crunching those scenarios we all have thought we might be in near finals time.

As for the app so far:

GUI - check (using the interface builder I have a simple layout of what I think a free app like this should do.) This just allows for the entry of the course hours and the grade based on a 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 scale. I haven't thought about trying to do simple letter grades or those crazy +- system grades.

The code - here's the problem I have no IDEA how to do the calculations in xCode, for that matter which of these files to do them in. If this was to be C++ or something to that matter I could easily do them and program it anyway I wanted to.

So in conclusion any help as to how to connect my number inputs (text boxe inputs) to formulas (in code) then pass the received values to another text box (the GPA display) would be greatly appreciated.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

I know that building an iPhone app is sexy right now, but have you considered turning this into a webapp?

If you've already got a handle on how to use a web scripting language like PHP, this seems like a trivial web project.

If you're still set on doing it on the iPhone, you'll need to learn objective-c - here's a tutorial I found.

I did take in to consideration a web app. But, how many people (I'm talking the normal masses) know about web apps out there for iPhones? I know most people here will say they do but, may app was geared toward the normal college student, this means getting an app in the app store. I decided this after asking to few fellow students if they even knew web apps were out there for the iPhone. The only ones that did know were my fellow CS majors. So that's my reasoning for going toward an app.

As for Obj C I have looked at tutorials and all but Apple's strange organization of their files in xCode has me a bit confused. That is really where I am looking for guidance.

I appreciate your response and will be taking a look into that website.

I myself am also starting out learning Obj-C and iphone development. I don't rely on Xcode for finding my help tutorials. I use the ADC books. So log onto your ADC account at developer.apple.com and then you can find a TON of resources there. Hope this helps....

Cheers

I have similar struggles with xCode. What I finally had to do was to take a step waaaaaaaaaaay back and start with something small. Really small. Try just making a simple C++ project. That helped me get used to the interface, file structure, ect.

Next, download some of those tutorials markhazeltt9 mentioned. Look for the ones with the files included. Apple has some basic stuff that should help you get going.

Good luck!

Objective C is just C with different OO extensions than C++. The language is really quite easy. The cocoa framework takes a little longer to learn, like all the strings and arrays and windows and button, but you won't need tons of that and you can only research what you need.

I'm not as knowledgable about web-apps yet, but it wouldn't be that hard a project, just some simple math. PHP, or even javascript, could do the job easily.

There are several objective C tutorials in the C++ forum that are okayish. I'm still not completely sure why they put them there,,

Good luck! :D

THanks for posting the objective-c link, I was looking for something like that.
