This question might seem a little odd at first but here me out.
For (lack of a better word) sophisticated computer users, is there any need for computer security software? (and before i get flamed) The last internet suite, or even a firewall/anti-virus i used was Norton internet security 2001. I hated the dam thing as i always thought it was creating extra work, when really i am a careful user. Let me allaborate.
I would class myself as an experienced computer and internet user, and what i mean by that is, i understand what the dangers are out there, i always know what i am downloading and where its going, i always keep a regular backup of anything i think holds value (work mainly), i always keep on top of updates (for system and apps), i am always careful when visiting "unknown sites" or have downloaded something from a forum. I spent alot of time on the computer to know when its acting different. I regularly wipe/format my computer once i feel its clutered with crap.
The thing is, i have never had or caught a virus (only very early days, you computer will shut down in 59secs OH NOES!!!), i don't get pestered my pop ups, i don't have spyware/adware/malware on my computer (regular checks). All i am running is windows firewall (hail to the chief baby!) What is the point of these security suites out there? i mean are they really that essential or are they just good at fear-mongering!
I want to know how you guys feel about them really, basically i feel if my computer went down badly, i would have the resources to just do a clean wipe and start again, rather than faffing about with restores and catching whatever went wrong?
Secondly i am interesting in hearing your experieces with them, what ones are good/bad (for whatever reasons
My vaio has just had a clean start, and was thinking about putting some freeware security suite on there (as i have just started using alot of public networks) just to test it and see what it does.
Well let me know....
Cheers
Jason
