I beat it twice... that last boss was hella hard!

String theory's a nice concept, but at best is far from the realm of practicality or finding a proof. I enjoyed the spirit of 'unified string theory', but that seems fairly impractical to get to. Some thing that encompasses everything? Not in my life time.

Though I am curious what you expect from this discussion. It's like asking "what is everyone's take on gravity".

Asking what everyone's take is on string theory is a lot different than asking what everyone's take is on gravity. Gravity is a proven fact; we all feel it all day every day. String theory on the other hand is not a proven fact; it's a theory.

It's actually a conglomeration of theories...more than one can shake a stick it, I'm afraid. There are those that advocate for, and a very few against. String theory advocates have garnered the majority of grants and professorships in the last 15 years, despite not having mad much in they way of significant advances. It's a bit of a touchy subject in the field.

One of the smartest (in my opinion) people I have had the pleasure of meeting wrote an interesting book on the subject. I always suggest that anyone who professes to advocate string theory read it to see another side of the coin.

I'd recommend it over a collection of youtube videos. :)

I should note that book is not a condemnation of string theory by any means...nor should string theory be discounted. It holds the potential to be the most significant advancement of all should it be proven (as much as it can be) true.

i think the point was that none of us here are physicists(i dont think there are, at least). Some people might have a pretty good understanding of it from reading about and watching the PBS specials about it, but just because you watch survivor man or whatever its called doesnt mean you would survive in the forest by youself for days.

Problem is that we don't know exactly what causes gravity. And unless my memory is fuzzy, String Theory is one explanation for gravity so they are not that different in asking people's take on string theory...just sayin.

String theory also says that there are 11 dimensions!

WTF is this "gravity" you speak of? All I know is that everything is attracted to the Earth (which in the absence of sarcasm, is true, but sarcastically, I mean it to be false), just because it's so awesome.

Gravity itself is not a theory. It can be tested again and again and again to the same end. However, there are different theories as to what exactly causes gravity.

String theory has an explanation for gravity? I'd like to hear this, can someone explain this to me or point me in the direction of a website with a good explanation?
