I'm reading PHP: Novice to Ninja (5th edition) by Kevin Yank. It's been very helpful in doing what it was intended to do, which was to teach you how to make a database driven website with MySQL & PHP. I already had the basics of both languages down, I just didn't know how to put it together. Now I'm finally using it to make my first small CMS.

I'm also reading Beginning CSS Web Development from Novice to Professional by some Brit (can't remember his name). CSS is another thing I've got the basics down for, I'm just not good at making anything pretty with it - hope this will help with that.

Edit: Pardon this, I had no idea how dead this thread was. Given the activity of the top threads of this forum I assumed any and all threads on this page would be at least.. somewhat recent.

I am going through Beginning Java Game Programming 2nd Edition. Its written really well and I am actually learning about graphics (which I always stunk at) and sprite animations using Java.

Definitely recommend it for beginners.

Really? I thought it was pretty useless, myself. Too much blather, too much bragging about the language, not enough solid information. So far the only thing I've found that's helpful on Scala is the language spec itself.

I read a lot I suppose.

I wanted to learn Android Development more thoroughly so I'm reading the first book.

I was incredibly annoyed at the lack of relevant data that built in management systems provided on wireless antennas, so I wanted to do high level statistics without programming my own library. Stumbled on R, and started reading on that as well.

CS as my school never required discrete math or high level math, so I'm compensating as much as possible with math books such as the last one to repair that nasty handicap.

The crypto kick continues. My copies of Practical Cryptography (Ferguson & Schneier) and Handbook of Applied Cryptography (Menezes, et al) arrived like a one-two punch yesterday and today, and Schneier's Applied Cryptography will arrive any day now. Practical looks like an excellent guidebook for the computer professional who wants an overview of the considerations but is not planning on knowing the subject in depth. It's also an excellent preparatory textbook, I wish I'd been able to read it over before taking the Stanford course. Handbook of Applied looks like it'll be a great reference in section 2 of the crypto course, and it has a pretty deep coverage of the number theory background (which is a particular weak spot of mine, unfortunately)

Combined with part 2 of the Boneh course, these should keep me busy through the Spring.

I'm reading three books because I cannot decide on which language I want to learn.

• Microsoft Visual C# 2010 by John Sharp.
  
• Java Programming by Yakov Fain.
  
• Python for kids by Jason Briggs.

C# seems the easiest to learn because Visual Studio is very easy IDE and the .exe file is quite easy to use. .java and .py is a bit trickery.

I'm currently reading JUnit in Action and so far it's pretty good. I feel like I'm learning a good bit from it. You'd be surprised at how easy it is to write bad tests. I could use some practice writing unit tests, since I rarely ever tests for my own code.

I'm really excited to learn about the ins and outs of integration testing and functional testing. I've written acceptance tests for a Rails system, so I have an idea of how they work, but I'm still trying to sort out how everything fits together. Testing is quite a bit of work in itself.
