What browsers should I test my site in?

Posted 12 May 2009 - 08:37 PM

I'm working on my site. It looks good in IE-7, FireFox and since I use it a lot, Chrome. Is it worth trying to test it in IE-6? Is there a way to test it in IE-8 with out uninstalling IE-7? Does anybody use Netscape anymore? Are there any I'm missing? I know that Opera is popular, should I check it in that?

As far as testing in IE8, I don't know if you can install both at the same time. You could have a virtual machine with a windows install that has IE8, but that seems a little extreme. People still use IE6, and most professionals will tell you to test with it. For my part, I refuse to. Opera and Safari are probably worth looking into.

I do have a second machine that I can put IE-8 on. This one uses IE-7. I realize some people still like IE-6, my room-mates refuse to upgrade so I think I'll get them to try it.

depends on what sort of usergroup your site is for
I would try them on those:

primary (most used browsers by normal folk)
  • IE 6
  • IE 7
  • Firefox

secondary (less used or more by professionals)
  • IE 8
  • Opera
  • Chrome
  • Safari

Useful Links on this subject:
There's a little browser out there called IETester, that lets you try your webpages for IE5.5 up to IE8 beta or something. Check it out!

If you run Windows with XP there's a bundle with all IE-versions, read article here.

Then you also always have Browsershots to see if the visual part of your site holds up on a certain page.

About IE6: in Norway there's a campaign to get rid of IE6 where companies put out a text telling the user to update their browsers if they try to visit their sites with it.

My answer to your question:
Try it in all browsers you can run on the same machine and that is free of charge, and when it comes to IE I wouldn't bother fixing it for versions under 6 perhaps not even for version 6 since it's also a very much outdated browser!

I've noticed though that you shouldn't only try your site on different browsers but also on different OS + Browsers since it works quite different on different machines and settings and stuff.

Hope it helps! :)

I was actually thinking of what it would look like in other OSes.

I should be able to test all of these with minimal fuss:

Quote

IE 6
IE 7
Firefox

secondary (less used or more by professionals)
IE 8
Opera
Chrome
Safari

The more testing you do, the better, although don't go crazy ;D. Its good to see your site is as many different ways as possible. I'm surprised nobody mentioned the w3 browser stats. IE six is still a significant player, and you probably shouldn't ignore it yet.
