What was your first Programming/IT job? How'd you get it? How long did you have it? Was it part time or full time?

Writing a key/test drive management system for a used car dealership. Written in QBasic -- Only got paid 1/2 of the money owed for it. I guess you would call this "contract work" although there was no contract.

Then when I was in the Navy I was a system administrator and DB admin. Not to mention an operator. I also developed the Ship's first web page which was a lot of fun. -- I don't recommend joining the Navy just for IT experience, but it does work. Guess you would call this "full time".

Then in school I... well I didn't really do anything "professionally" but I was had several projects that ended up on my resume (at the request of my current employers -- so my advice is to add any non-trivial project to your resume even if you think, "well it was just a school assignment").

Now I work for an Enterprise Content Management company working in enterprise java and have been working here for 2 years. I am a full time employee.

I'm an associate (contractor) at a large company in the airline industry. Part time usually, but full time when I can. It's a great job.

You'll get used to it ;)

Now I work for an Enterprise Content Management company

Interesting, I was, out of curiosity, looking at systems like that not too long ago - It's a problem that hasn't really been solved at the company I work for. Do you provide a product or is it custom?

@c0mrade -- We have a product - but enterprise content management is kind of a huge field where everyone wants their own new hottness. For this reason the software is very customizable and tends to require customization. Although this is not really NEEDED but most customers don't truly want OOTB -- they want Flash and iPhones and user contributor experiences.

That is where I come in.

I'm going to be one of the two "Network Assistants" at school in the fall (SUNY Geneseo). Ultimately I'll be sort of in charge of the school's wireless and wired internet netowrks/routers etc...

My very 1st IT job, I was what was known as a "Downloader". I basically installed software onto ATMs at Diebold.

Insert disc one *check*
Insert disc two *check*
Fill out paper work
Check for configuration sign-off
Insert disc three *check*
Ghost image the now completed configuration so the customer has a backup.

We would do like 10 or so of these (each) a day. Mindless, drooling, boring, monotonous work.

@searockruz
I'm definitely looking forward to it. If the timing of my hiring had worked out a little differently, I'd be doing that this summer instead of working in a factory >.<
