I have lost them, my parents took them.

Legal Rights

Posted 20 May 2009 - 04:44 AM

OK, heres the skinny. I HAD a live account and my parents canceled it. It was under my name and my credit card. She did not co-sign for the account as well. Does she or X-Box live have the legal rights to do this?

Credit cards at 18 is a normal thing in the US.

And no, provided you are not - for whatever reason - legally an adult ward of your parents (ie, severe mental or physical disability making it impossible for you to care for yourself, etc), neither party has the right to cancel your account without your permission. I would call Live and take it up with them if you really want the privilege back.... though this could piss off your parents and leave you living on the street... but with an active X-Box account (w00t!?).....

I had one at 18.

@holden, if you mother's name is on the card account then yes, if not, then, in the words of the internet, you got ROFLPWNED.

You're really gonna hate the new Obama credit rules. They require a parent/co-signer to be ultimately responsible for any credit card you have prior to age 21.

But I'm with sloth on this one, you probably deserved it. Especially if you're still under your parents roof.

Good. They need to implement something like that. I don't think you should be considered an adult and able to do all those adulty things until you're 21.

My god. The 18-year-old me would kick my old geezer ass for saying that. Damned kids! Get off mah lawn!

Proof of ability to make payments will be required for consumers 21 years old and younger, either by the consumer or his or her parents

So if you can make the payments, you're fine, otherwise, your parents will have to guarantee (and thus have a say in the whole thing) payment.
