Comic Book MUST READ List.

Posted 02 June 2009 - 12:39 PM

What's up guys. I don't know about you, but I like comic books. I'm not a complete dork for them, but I do enjoy reading one if it's good.

If you're new to comics or if you don't know what to read this topic is a great place to start.

I'll start by listen two of my favorite comics ever:

1. Y: The Last Man

Quote

Y: The Last Man is a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, about the only man to survive the mysterious simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth.

2. Preacher

Quote

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a down-and-out preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer was accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis in an incident which killed his entire congregation and flattened his church.

Genesis, the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon, is an infant with no sense of individual will. However, as it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, it might have enough power to rival that of God himself. In other words, Jesse Custer, bonded to Genesis, may have become the most powerful being in the whole of living existence.

The ending of "Y" made me cry. Only comic book to ever pull it off. Great stuff.

Preacher, is just plain MANLY. It doesn't get much more manly than that. I recommend both. :P

I like the series, but I can't stand the protagonist, Jesse Custer. He's way to macho, and way to preachy! :)

Anyways, here are three very good comic book series:

Hellblazer

Quote

John Constantine is the most intriguing character in comics today. Created by comics legend Alan Moore in 1985, Constantine is a working-class mage, a thief, a con-artist, former punk, and savior of the known universe. Constantine is by turns a total bastard, a drunk, a trickster, an adrenaline junkie, a womanizer, and sometimes, when no one is looking, a nice guy. He has no superpowers, only a sharp wit, a little bit of magic, and a reputation Aleister Crowley would envy.

The Invisibles
Posted Image

Quote

The Invisibles broke new ground with characters like the trans-gender sorceress Lord Fanny and the time-traveller Ragged Robin, but his attention to historical detail (featuring author Mary Shelley, libertine the Marquis de Sade, George Byron and Percy Shelley as characters) and unusual locations perhaps alienated a target U.S. comic-phile audience unused to multi-layered complexity and ambiguity.

Transmetropolitan
Posted Image

Quote

Some time in the future (how long precisely is never specified) Spider Jerusalem, retired writer and bearded hermit, lives an isolated existence in a fortified mountain hideaway, retired from City life for the last five years. Following a call from his irate publisher demanding the last two books per his publishing deal, Jerusalem packs his belongings and descends the mountains before traveling back into The City, a twisted amalgam of pervasive consumerism, sex, violence, and drugs.

I'd second Hellblazer. Quite good.

The best of that kind of genre, hands down, would be The Sandman. Before the genius that is Neil Gamain moved on to novels and movies, he did comics. He writes modern fairy tales, leaning toward the macabre. If some of this stuff doesn't get your blood pumping, you're probably dead.

Alone the same lines, the Books of Magic. It focuses on a young magician, being watched over by a group of adepts ultimately dubbed "the Trenchcoat Brigade." Constantine is one of that group. The reader should note the time at which this was written and the main character's striking physical similarity to Harry Potter.
