AVI writer in C

Hi!

I would like to convert video files (that are in a special format) in AVI files. I will do it in C under Linux.
My first idea was to write a little programm that just generates an fake AVI file, just to be sure that I well understood the format.
Do you know if it already exists on the web?
I found some code, but it always uses the vfw.h (Video for Windows), that of course does not exist under linux.

any advice is welcome...
