As a member of a FIRST Robotics Team, I was thrilled when I heard that FIRST was gravitating towards Java. Seeing as my high school's specialty center (Center for IT) teaches Java in the Intro. Programming Class and the AP CS class, it will be advantageous to us because ~50% of the team is comprised of CIT students. In terms of FIRST, I think this is a positive shift from C and C++ because they have structured support for the platform from Sun/Oracle, as well as the entire open source community. In addition, college board supports Java with the AP Curriculum.
