Accepting and Verifying Credit Card Payments

Posted 12 June 2009 - 05:39 PM

Hello, not that long ago I was asked about SSL and online shopping by a graphic designer, and if I can do that, I told him I will look into it a little more. At the same time I sold my first item on Amazon (yes you can sell there too), talked to some people about selling online and found an old receipt from an online payment I once made that gave me some very valuable information. The odd bit maybe is that all happen independently from one another, I was not really looking for answers at that time.

But I have done some research and would like you guys to tell me if I understand correctly. These are the steps I need to take to set up an online shop:
1. Get a webhost that also provides SSL certificates and https support. The SSL certificate that you apply for are just if I have my own server and my own setup to verify that I did everything correctly? Anyone know any good hosts like that?
2. Pick a credit card processing service, every major bank own or partly owns one in Canada. Also found that PayPal provides a service that can accept credit cards. Which one is the "best choice"? Why?
3. Get the API from the credit card processing service provider.
4. Build/Connect my store application to their API and test it (information about testing should be in their documentation right?)

Further more, the web technology I want to use is PHP and I do know how to use XML although I have never used SOAP.

Your thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not quite sure if you can get Protx over there, but me and my employees specialise in Online Payments via that service.

We have a class available for easy use (which you'll see) available here: http://mageuk.com/ph...integration.php

Anyway, if you can get Protx over there, we can probably help you out as much as you want ;)

Sounds interesting, and I live in Canada. I was not able to find the coverage of your service, but it sounds like it is a UK only service. But there are different currency and taxes involved, so I am not sure how it works.

Thanks for the quick reply :).

I'll drop my account manager an email for you and see if they accept international (specifically Canadian) registrations and usage.

Will let you know ASAP. I've used quite a few payment processors and Protx are by far the best :)
