Do you know what BCC is

Posted 16 June 2009 - 07:33 AM

I ask because I recently explained this to a friend who has been in IT forever. I think he was a janitor at ENIAC -- Yet somehow he never knew what BCC was or how/why to use it. In fact I find myself introducing this feature of email to many people.

I find it an interesting feature of email and I use it from time to time. I am just surprised at how many people I meet in the industry who have no idea what it is.

Whoops. Oh dear. It should be 100% for the first and second one then. Useful but I rarely send out 'secretive' information. Most of the time, it is general so BCC is irrelevant then.

What would "'secretive' information" have to do with BCC.

I suppose if you had an email address that you didn't want other's to know about that would be "secretive information" -- but that is about the most BCC will do for protecting secrets

I use the BCC field when I send out emails to multiple email address that I have no authorization for sharing with others. Yes, I ask people to be able to put their addresses out for all the world to see!

I haven't ever used BCC, the only people I email are friends and teachers so I either send out a mass email to my friends, or individual emails which are different for each person (and thus BCC won't be effective).

Yes, use all the time, an I bloody well wish more people did.

Recently gave a friend, not to tech savvy, my email. He sometimes plays gigs in they area at likes to have a body count show up, if they can. So, an email a week, tops.

However, BCC is a mystery to him and when he emails, everyone and their cat is on the TO line. After his first correspondence, that email account's spam quotient goes up notably. Not that I expect any of his buddies sold me out to evil spammers, though I suppose they could have. Rather, chances are one of their zombiefied, malware ridden, botnet slave boxes reported me to their master. I know, it sounds bizarre, but it's likely.

Even discounting the botnet conspiracy, having my name and associated address thrown into a virtual room of strangers is not something that makes me happy.

I rarely use it but I know tons of guys who email themselves and add the real recipients on BCC so nobody can figure out who they are really sending their mails to.

I use it VERY rarely. There's really no reason to BCC unless one is being tricksy like b2c mentioned or deceptive. I might BCC something to myself to make sure it really rent.

I use it occasionally, but I never really had an absolute need to use it.

I agree with baavgai (he's usually right, you know).

I hardly ever send email any more, unless it's a personal message to a friend or teacher, in which case there will only be one address in the list anyway. But if I send out mass email, I consider it a courtesy to the recipients to not show their email to everyone in the world. Like baavgai says, it increases the spam.

What about those 'fun survey' type things? Do you ever fill those out? Not good!

See people think that it has something to do with being secretive... it really doesn't.

If you are friends with person X and I am not, then when you email something to both person X and me then now person X has my email address (trust me I have used this to figure out peoples email addresses before).

Generally this is not all that much trouble as I can always put person X on a block list and never have to care about it.

Now suppose that you are mass mailing something out to everyone on your email list --- now we all have all of those email addresses -- since it was SO interesting you had to send it to everyone, at least one person is going to forward that to all of thier friends -- now my email has been shared will all your firends and all your friend's friends. Eventually a spammer is going to pick up this message and now has a nice database constructed for them of email address to start spamming.

BCC can really help keep this down...

Those "fun surveys" are a data-miner's dream. If you think they are just for fun your either naive or stupid (usually naive).

Email Etiquette should be part of high school computer literacy and corporate training.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.
